[Personal writing] Bucharest
Bucharest.jpg(English version below)
Forgotten in the East—
Having borne a splendid craft, endured the chaos of war, and beneath the red snow in winter, you were reborn.
Let them in the West sing your name:
“Paris! Paris!”
Refusing to look back, with temples built of stone you honor your faith; Within your conflicted frame dwells a pious soul.
“Paris! Paris!”
Refusing to look away, along avenues scented with linden you walk with grace; Beneath your fractured exterior lies a cultured warmth.
Until one day, they no longer called you that.
“Bucharest,”
someone said.
You turned back with a smile,
A beauty brighter than the old city in the West.

Bucharest, the capital of Romania, was once famously dubbed the “Paris of the East.” However, having walked her streets and understood the memories of her people, I believe she has already built an image of her own.
The contradictory architecture, the revolutionary fires, the elegant literary spirit — her beauty, like every scar she bears, belongs to her and her alone.
